Tinkering is a traditional handicraft focused on the production, repair, and decoration of objects made of wire and thin sheet metal. In the Kysuce region, it developed mainly as an itinerant craft – craftsmen traveled from village to village, repairing damaged kitchenware (especially pots and pans), producing hooks, handles, grids, and other simple household items. In addition, they offered decorated containers and ornamental objects, which they sold at fairs and markets.
Origins and Social Context
The roots of tinkering in Kysuce date back to the 18th century. In this mountainous area, where work opportunities were scarce, tinkering became a way for local people to earn a living. Initially practiced as supplementary work, it later became the main source of income for many. Villages such as Vysoká nad Kysucou and Zakopčie turned into important centers of this craft. Tinkers traveled with their tools and products in a backpack, often with a walking stick, offering repairs directly in households.
Techniques and Production
Tinkering involves working with thin iron or steel wire and sheet metal. The main techniques include:
winding and weaving wire into patterns and shapes,
joining and fastening sheet metal parts with nails, rivets, or simple welding and gluing,
surface treatment such as tinning or chroming,
repair methods for cookware – for example, attaching handles or strengthening pots with metal strips.
Alongside utilitarian objects, craftsmen gradually began producing decorative pieces – vases, candlesticks, baskets, jewelry, and ornamental fittings. Thus, tinkering evolved from a purely practical activity into a form of folk art.
Social Significance and Tradition
Tinkering was not only an economic necessity but also an expression of the cultural identity of Kysuce. Tinkers connected villages and towns, bringing new ideas, objects, and techniques. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it became a symbol of the region. While practical products served every household, ornamental works enriched the local aesthetic culture. With industrialization and mass production of enamel or plastic kitchenware, itinerant tinkering gradually declined. In recent decades, however, a renaissance has emerged, with tinkering finding its place in contemporary art and design.
UNESCO Recognition and Safeguarding
In December 2019, tinkering was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This recognition confirmed its outstanding value and encouraged efforts to document, preserve, and pass on the tradition to future generations. The inscription highlighted the need to protect tinkering practices as a significant part of Slovak cultural heritage.
Contemporary Forms and Education
Specialized exhibitions and museums (such as Drotária) collect tools, photographs, and historical artifacts,
folk craftsmen and artists revive traditional techniques and adapt them in modern design (candlesticks, decorative accessories).
